Shinogi Tea Cups
A set of two cups, hand-carved by the artist. These cups have been carved in the Shinogi style - a Japanese decorative technique of carving clay by hand. It's a time intensive process, giving pieces texture and allowing the glaze to "break," thinning at peaks and pooling between peaks.
The glaze crackles on these cups, adding an additional layer of texture. The artist made the inside of the cups a lighter cream color, so as to highlight the color of the tea.
Kiyomi Koide was raised in Japan and discovered clay in San Miguel de Allende.
Thrown + carved by the artist in Berkeley.
